One small box. One big ritual.
Storybranch turns fifteen minutes of reading together into deliberate practice for your child's judgment. Here's what arrives, and what happens on the couch.
What lands in your mailbox
The adventure book
A freshly printed branching story, tuned to your child's age band. Dozens of paths, multiple endings, built to be re-read — a different adventure every time your child chooses differently.
The parent guide
A short, friendly companion that tells you which thinking skills this month's story targets — and gives you 30-second coaching questions to ask at the forks. No prep required.
The adventure map
A memorable introduction to the story's lead characters, parent persona and voice suggestions for bringing them to life, and a map with guides to every outcome.
What fifteen minutes looks like
Settle in, set the quest
You read the setup aloud (or your emerging reader does). Together you name the mission out loud — "we're escaping the island" — so there's a goal to steer by at every fork.
Pause at the fork
A choice appears. Before reading the book's options, you ask one small question from the guide — "what would you try first?" Your child forms their own idea before any menu appears.
Choose and predict
Your child picks a path and makes a ten-second forecast: best case, worst case. Then you turn the page together and find out what actually happens.
Talk about the outcome
Triumph or trap, the outcome is a conversation: what did we learn, what would we do differently, what does this change about our plan? Then onward — or back for another branch.
That's the whole engine. Pause, think, choose, learn — repeated at every fork, every book, every month. The story keeps the energy high; the repetition builds the habit.
The anti-algorithm reading device
We didn't skip the app to be quaint. Paper is the point — it changes who is in control.
| The moment | On a screen | With a Storybranch book |
|---|---|---|
| What happens next | Autoplay decides. The feed never ends. | Nothing happens until your child decides. The book ends when it ends. |
| Who's in charge | An algorithm optimizing for watch time. | Your child's choices — and your questions. |
| The pace | Faster than thought, by design. | As slow as a good think. Pausing is the feature. |
| You, the parent | Competing with the device for attention. | Inside the story, coaching at every fork. |
| After it's over | "One more video!" | "Can we go back and try the other path?" |
Tuned for ages 3–8
Ages 3–5 · You read, they rule
Short read-aloud adventures with two clear choices per fork, bold picture cues, and outcomes that land within a page or two. Your child doesn't need to read a word — they need to point, predict, and decide. You're the narrator; they're the boss of the story.
Ages 6–8 · They read, you coach
Longer branches, tools and clues to track, red-herring characters to question, and goals that take several good decisions to reach. Emerging readers take over more of the reading while you shift fully into the coach's seat.
Each month's story also rotates its skill focus — planning one month, spotting misinformation the next, weighing trade-offs after that — so a year of Storybranch quietly covers the whole seven-skill framework.
Be first at the fork.
